How Pip teaches
Pip is the tutor inside TernQuest. A child can tap Pip, or just talk, when a question is hard. Pip is built on one rule: a child learns by working it out, so Pip never gives the answer away before they've tried.
What a conversation sounds like
Question: Who has more cookies? 🍪🍪🍪 or 🍪🍪
Child: Um, I think the one with two cookies.
Pip: Close look — can you count the cookies in the first group out loud?
Pip doesn't say "wrong" and doesn't say "three". It gives the next small step, so the child finds it themselves.
What Pip does
- Asks the next question instead of giving the answer. Every reply is checked twice before your child hears it: once by fixed rules, and once by a second AI that reads it only to catch the answer slipping out in other words. If either one objects, the reply is replaced.
- Explains once your child has tried. After a question is marked, the answer is no longer a secret. If your child asks "why was that right?", Pip explains it, as many times as they ask.
- Waits for them to finish talking. Young children pause mid-sentence. Pip waits longer for younger grades before it answers, so it doesn't cut them off.
- Remembers where they left off. Pip knows how your child did on this skill last time and what has tripped them up before, so it can pick up where they left off.
- Reads everything aloud. Questions and answer choices each have a speaker button, so a child who can't read a word yet can still answer the question.
How it's kept safe
- Personal details are removed first. Email addresses, phone numbers and street addresses are stripped from what a child says before it reaches the AI.
- A safety check reads every message. If a child says something that sounds like they may be hurt or in danger, Pip stops the lesson and tells them to talk to a grown-up they trust. If they ask for something that isn't for kids, Pip steers back to the question.
- Voice is not kept. When a child talks to Pip, the audio is turned into text and then discarded.
- You're in charge. A parent or teacher can turn the AI coach off for any child, set a daily time limit and a bedtime, and Pip's live help has a daily cap.
- No ads, and no chatting about other things. Pip only helps with the question on the screen. TernQuest shows no third-party ads. Details are in our privacy policy.
What you see
The weekly report shows how your child is getting on, including a "Getting better" section: for each skill they've practised this month, their first try next to their latest, for example Count to 100: 4 of 10 → 9 of 10. It also shows what Pip has noticed about how they learn, such as whether they like to see a picture or talk it through.
